Yepocapa: Las Nubes
When we first started Yepocapa Coffee, we had a lot of ideas in our minds! We wanted to see coffee farming become a sustainable career, we wanted to see the farmers produce amazing coffees, and we wanted Yepocapa to be known amongst Guatemalans to be known as a region of excellence amongst small plot coffee farmers etc etc. But above all, it has been our passion to honor coffee farmers and their work. One of the ways we were able to do that this year was to separate out a coffee from a region called Las Nubes "The Clouds" from a farmer named Don Evaristo Charuc.
Don Evaristo has been working with coffee for as long as he can remember. He told us stories of how he learned to plant coffee plants from his grandparents as they would pray over each plant after paying careful attention to each one. From there, Don Evaristo inherited land from his father and even built his own wet mill where he processed his own cherries and sold his own parchment nationally to a coffee business milling and roasting out of Guatemala City.
When 2001 hit, he knew he needed to work with the cooperative to obtain better pricing. The C-market value dropped and the cooperative was able to obtain better pricing since they were able to sell in larger quantities. Since then he's enjoyed working with the cooperative. He gets access to better fertilizers, training, and a community of other farmers in his area.
The only aspect he missed about processing his own cherries was knowing that his work wasn't being mixed in with other farmers. After getting to know many other farmers like Don Evaristo, we asked the leadership team of the cooperative if we could separate out his coffee once again. They replied with confidence and made it happen. For Don Evaristo and soon to be many more, their work has value again knowing that their coffees are being separated out and given special recognition by roasters in the States.
We're paying a premium for these coffees because it's a great coffee, they're cupping really nicely, and there's a bit more work involved both at the wet mill and at the dry mill. It's these coffees that provide a means to honor coffee farmers and their work while obtaining a better product at the same time. We hope you love these coffees as much as we have. Who knows, maybe Don Evaristo might even make his way to the States to say thank you someday...!
